Four Steps to Getting a CDL Career Started

How to Obtain a Class A CDL

To obtain a Class A CDL, there are specific requirements. You must first ensure you meet the age (18+ for intrastate, 21+ for interstate) and pass a DOT physical and drug test. Next, start your CDL Class A training course and then pass the written tests for a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) which includes General Knowledge, Air Brakes, and Combination Vehicles. After obtaining your CLP, you can start your Behind-the-Wheel training. Once your instructor determines you're ready, you will take a road skills test consisting of a pre-trip inspection, basic controls, and road driving. Pass and obtain your CDL. The final test can be taken at any approved testing site or through a third-party examiner.
